It's been complicated because of the issue of slavery. I had suspicions about who the father of my gr grandfather was for so many years. Then through DNA testing I found some cousins that shared with me a lot of Zuber information and from their information I was able to add more Zuber people that go back to Germany and Denmark. Richard S. Zuber was the father of Jordan L. Zuber. Richard was born 1829 in Oglethorpe Co. Georgia. He fathered two children with Tamer Zuber. Jordon and Walter.
Richard died May 8, 1897 in Rome, Georgia.

died: 1865 Floyd Co. Georgia
Mary Nancy Finch, born: Dec. 15, 1788, Virginia
died: Oct. 16, 1869, Floyd Co. Ga.

The only other information I have is that Daniel Zuber unfortunately owned slaves. I find it interesting that the family was from Pennsylvania, plus the families before them came to this country to get away from oppression yet they moved to the south and decided to buy and sell human beings. Richard owned slaves as well, I haven't looked yet into the other family members to see if they owned any. All I can say to this is Shame On You Daniel and Richard.
I will add documents to this later for each of the people I have mentioned in the post as soon as I get them all in order. I haven't been able to find out much about Mary Bartling, I was hoping to find some information about her being in Denmark and her family there. Richard Zuber doesn't seem to have much of a paper trail either, but this is exciting to at least found out this much, it's been so many years not knowing anything at all. The DNA testing really cracked the brick wall right open.

Thanks for sharing. I am a Pennsylvian Dutch Zuber from Pennsylvania also working on our Zuber geneology. I came from the same initial line of George Zuber and Margaret Van Horne. I come from the Zubers that settled in Lancaster and Berks County. I was disappointed to see the slavery as well but I became curious to know if slavery occurred in my family line since my husband is half black and it sparked my knowing when watching college football on TV. There is a young black man by the name of Isaiah Zuber(#7) playing for the Kansas State University. He is the first black person I have seen with the same last name. He is from Georgia...so now I am wondering if he carries the slave name or was married into it.
ReplyDeleteI'm digging through same Zuber ancestry. I stumbled on this blog and was curious if you had any updates. I got down to John Micheal Zuber (maybe Johann Micheal Zuber?) and Catherine. I do see some discrepancy in his spouse. I see records referencing an Anna, Marie, and/or Margaret. It nearly appears Im seeing another generation of a Jr versus the Sr John Micheal. Its a little messy and I dont see a firm correlation that makes me think one is more correct than the other.
ReplyDeleteI didnt see any mention of William Physick Zuber. He eventually settled in Texas, wrote a book, and has records and even a portrait in Texas State Capital. I believe thats also where he's buried. If you didnt know that already, its worth the digging; lots of info.
Karen Lamb, of Decatur, WA. discovered all this material and made it available in the 1970s.
